ईशा वास्यमिदं सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत्।
तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् ॥
Language: Sanskrit; Script: Devanagari
Author: Unknown; Book: Ishopanishad (~ 1st millennium BCE)
Romanized Transliteration:
Isha vasyamidam sarvam yatkincha jagatyam jagat,
Tena tyaktena bhunjutha maa gridhah kasyasviddhanam.
Approximate Translation:
Whatever exists in this world is for the god. We (humans) should consume it only in a renouncing manner and shouldn’t lust after other people’s possessions.
Why I love it:
In a world characterized by consumerism and materialistic lust, we humans need a reminder that life is much more than just pricey cars, big houses and fancy clothes. This shloka (Sanskrit couplet) from 3000 years ago instructs us to live life in the pursuit of something bigger than mere material objects!
