Literature Gems #6 Amrita Pritam

Language: Punjabi; Script: Gurumukhi
Author: Amrita Pritam; Poem: Mera pata (“My address”)

Romanized Transliteration
Te jithe vee sutantar rooh di jhalak pavey
Samajhna uh mera gar hai .

Approximate Translation
If you want to find me for certain, then knock on every door of every street of every city of every country and wherever you catch a glimpse of free spirit, consider it my home.

Why I love it
The poetess makes a twist on “Home is where heart is” and considers freedom the dearest thing for us humans, especially women and other oppressed groups. As a person who has travelled the world alone, I personally know the value of freedom! Plus, the poem sounds simply divine in its original Punjabi.
